Lewis Tyrel Barrow was born March 10, 1840, the son of James Barrow and Catharine David Cryder Barrow. He joined the 18th Illinois Company C with his brother Flavius on August 15, 1862. He died of disease of the lungs while in the U.S. Army at Jackson, Tennessee, on January 23, 1863. According to his service record, he died at the age of 23 years, 10 months, and 13 days, which, reckoned from his birth date, puts his death date at January 23, 1864, not 1863. Perhaps whoever calculated his life span failed to notice that adding ten months to his birth month, March, rolled the calendar over into the next year, making his death date a year later. However, this is undoubtedly an error of calculation; his death date was surely recorded accurately, as was his birth date. Also related to Lewis Tyrel Barrow's dates, according to the book "History of Jackson County, Illinois", published in 1878, Lewis "gave his life at Jackson, Tennessee, April 5, 1863", adding further confusion as to the date of his death. However, Andrew Jackson Barrow, of Campbell Hill, Illinois, recorded the Barrow family history in the Record Book of the Unity Church, on December 16, 1910, and he is quoted, "Lewis Tyrel Barrow, son of James and Catharine D. Barrow, died Jan 23, 1863, while in the United States Army at Jackson, TN, against the rebels of the south called the Southern Confederacy, Age 23 yrs, 10 mos and 13 days."
