Dec. 19, 1889 Wolbach Greeley County Nebraska, USA
Nov. 1, 1979 Lincoln Lancaster County Nebraska, USA
Nona Josephine Carlson was born on December 19, 1889 to Carl Oscar Carlson and Josephine 'Johanson' Carlson in Wolbach, Nebraska. She was born shortly after her parents and her older sister Gertrude 'Betty' came to America on August 29, 1889. They had traveled from their homeland of Goteburg, Sweden on a steamer, then by rail until they settled innto a section house made of sod and wood near Wolbach, Nebraska. The three sisters attended school at Summit, Nebraska until the third grade.
Nona married John Berger Bengston and they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Nona lived out the rest of her life. She worked as a housekeeper as she waited for the return of her husband when he was serving in the US Army during WWI. Nona was a beautiful lady and was ahead of her time in the styles of the time.
She lost Berger when he was trying to save a little girl from drowning in the river. Berger had gone fishing with his friends Coy, Roy and Coy's grandaughter Luella. Luella and Berger went wading in the river, Luella stepped into a hole and went under. Berger tried to save her but was caught up in the swift moving current and they both drowned. (See more of this on John Berger Bengston's memorial #41650938.)
Nona continued to live in their home in Lincoln, Nebraska until her death in 1979. She would go to Wobach to visit with her sister and their family for years helping them when ever she could. When there was painting to do on the farm, she wasn't afraid to put on a pair of bib overalls and get out to help paint the buildings, she was very independent all of her life.
Nona died at the age of 90 while still living and taking care of herself at her home in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband John 'Berger', her parents and her two sisters; Gertrude 'Betty' and Yarda.
She leaves behind her nieces; Emma J. Knudsen, Margaret N. Knudsen and Frances E. Nestor all of Woodstock, Illinois and many great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held by the Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln, Nebraska
Interment is at the Valparaiso Cemetery, Valparaiso, Nebraska.
