Chapter Five: Margaret ("Mag") Anderson

The name Margaret Matilda Anderson would sound strange to most family members, as she is known in the family only as "Aunt Mag." Further, she is almost always linked with her only sister, Mary, so they will be treated together in this narrative. They were the only daughters born to Robert Anderson, and neither married. They lived in the home place until the death of their mother in 1906, their father having died 14 years earlier. Following their mother's death, they moved to Kouts, with the home place being occupied by brother Sam's daughter Birdella, who had married Nelson Hughes a year earlier.

Mag and Mary moved near the new Presbyterian Church in Kouts, and the pastor, Rev. Bauer, roomed at their home. The older relatives living today fondly remember "Aunt Mag and Aunt Mary," whether on the farm or in town. They were regarded with other members of the family as "pillars in the Presbyterian Church." They helped their brothers in the raising of the nieces and nephews. One niece remembers the cleanliness of the house -- "When I ate there and got up from the table, I had to hold my dress to empty the crumbs in the waste paper basket."

Their cooking brings rave revues, with comments such as the following: "We liked to stop in and sit in a rocker with them. There never was much conversation; I always had a cookie"....."Aunt Mag made the best bread and her sugar cookies had a hickory nut half or a raisin in the center. Once when I was there she gave me some dandelion greens, a special treat."....."It was a delight to go to their place for tea. The tablecloth was so white, bread with peach preserves."
