Birth: 1889, USA
Death: Jan. 27, 1978
New Hampshire, USA

Sue was born and reared in
Vermont. As a young girl
in 1905, she took a job as a nanny
and housemaid for the nearby Parrish
family at their estate, The Oaks.
She moved away in 1960...

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Sue Lewin became the muse, model
and assistant to MAXFIELD PARRISH,
the artist. There is much speculation
regarding if their relationship was
'more' than employer and employee.

Parrish used many props, costumes
and photographs to aid him in his work.
Sue posed for figures in sixteen murals
created for Curtis Publishing (1911-16);
Sue also portrayed over 200 figures -
both male and female - in Parrish's work.
(His oils were turned into very popular
prints and millions of them were sold
during the 1920s, "30s and "40s.)
She posed for many other artworks,
including those for Gertrude Whitney
plus many of Parrish's advertising
commissions.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

There was speculation that
Parrish would marry Sue after
his wife died; However, he did
not. He left her the minor
sum of $3,000.00 in his will.

As an older woman, Sue married
a childhood beau - a widower,
Earle Colby. They were wed in
1960 / and he died in 1974.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Colby had children from a
previous marriage who inherited
his house. Sue then moved into
her Aunt's home. Her gracious
Aunt then left the dwelling to
Sue in her will. This was where
she dwelled until her own demise.

Sue had no children

** A MEMORIAL WRITING **

"When all the world
is a hopeless jumble
And the raindrops
tumble all around
Heaven opens a magic lane
When all the clouds
darken up the skyway
There's a rainbow
to be found
Leading from your widow pane
To a place behind the sun
Just a step beyong
the rain."
