Civil War Union Officer. Erskine Gittings, being a bit over 16-years old, was the youngest of the West Point Class of 1861. He was appointed to the USMA from his native Maryland in 1856, and was ranked 30th upon graduating with the May class. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant at the time, with a promotion to 1st lieutenant soon thereafter. He was assigned to the 3rd United States Artillery, and before the war ended had seen considerable action at such battles as Pocataligo, SC; Vicksburg; Knoxville and the Wilderness. On October 22, 1862, he was brevetted captain for "gallant and meritorious service at Pocataligo, SC." Further on November 29, 1863, he was brevetted major for "gallant and meritorious service during the siege of Knoxville, Tenn." He remained in the Army after the war ended, and for a period, was an Assistant Professor at his alma mater. He died on September 20, 1880 at Fort Hamilton, New York.
