| Birth: | Aug. 11, 1838 | | Death: | Mar. 25, 1876 |  Civil War Union Officer. Richard Mason Hill entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in July of 1857. He was a member of the 1861 (June) Class, and was ranked 7th in the standing upon graduating. As customary, he was brevetted 2nd lieutenant at this time and was assigned to the Ordnance Department. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant on June 24, 1861, and was brevetted major on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious service in the Ordnance Department." He remained in the United States military achieving the rank of full major. Family links: Parents: Clement Hill (1815 - 1880)
