Letitia M. "Tish" Hower, 82, of Mexico, died at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at her home.
Born on July 19, 1927, in Port Royal, PA, Juniata County, she is a daughter of the late Harry S. and Sara G. (Swartz) Wert. Her husband, Oscar E. "Ozzie" Hower, whom she married on Jan. 10, 1946, preceded her in death on April 9, 1988.
Surviving are one son, Oscar E. Hower, III, one daughter, Sandra L. Welshonse, both of Mexico, one sister, Marjorie L. Landis and her husband Robert, of Live Oak, Fla., two grandchildren, Jason E. Welshonse, of Brockport, Letitia M. Yoder and her husband, Kenneth, of Mifflintown, two great- grandchildren, Lukas Yoder and Samantha Yoder, and she also leaves behind her beloved Weimaraner Ginger.
One son-in-law, James H. "Jim" Welshonse, preceded her in death on March 7, 2002.
Tish was a 1945 graduate of Tuscarora Valley High School, Port Royal, where she was a majorette in the band, a member of the Mexico United Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the church choir for many years, and she was also a member of the Juniata County Republican Women.
In earlier life, she worked at Renninger's Dress Factory, Mifflintown, before retiring in 1980 from the Rae-Sel factory in Port Royal. After retiring, she worked for six years at the Mexico Post Office.
As a young girl, she was well known for her talents, including tap dancing, singing, and twirling the baton. Through these talents, she entered 33 talent show contests, and won all 33 contests that she entered. Her singing talent also earned her a spot on WHP Radio on Saturday evenings. During the Juniata County Presidential Ball for Franklin D. Roosevelt, she had the honor to entertain the attendees.
Mrs. Hower was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who enjoyed camping at Dad's Dream and spending time with her family and friends, especially her great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Reverend Crystal Lyde officiating. Interment will follow in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, PA.
Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at the funeral home.
