John enlisted in Company F, 4th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, CSA, and served until captured at the Battle of Chickamauga 19-10 Sept 1863 and imprisoned at the POW camp in Louisville, KY. In his day, soldiers like John Ghent were called "galvanized Yankees". Rather than spend the rest of the war as a prisoner, he agreed to serve in the 3rd US Volunteer Infantry, a regiment comprised of former Confederate POW's. Assigned to outposts in Nebraska and Colorado, the regiment served with distinction and few desertions. The 3rd US Volunteer Infantry was mustered out 29 Nov 1865.
