His career of twenty-nine years was highlighted by triumphs at the Kentucky Derby in 1958 (riding Tim Tam), Kentucky Derby in 1968 (riding Forward Pass), Preakness in 1958 (riding Tim Tam) and Preakness in 1968 (riding Forward Pass). In addition, he won 22 races while riding Hall of Fame horse Kelso which includes 19 stakes. Raised in Mexico, he began his career as a jockey at age seventeen in 1951. He retired in 1980 after amassing 2,545 victories. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 2008. (bio by: C.S.)
