Norma Oehlke, family helped found Lorain

Norma Oehlke, 92, of Lorain, died Sunday morning at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain.

She was born in Lorain and had been a life-long resident.
Miss Oehlke was an eighth-generation American, settling here from Germany. Her family was among the early founders
of Lorain. They established one of the first factories in Lorain, manufacturing clay pots for green houses.

Miss Oehlke was a graduate of Lorain Highh School and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in English from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where she also worked on her master's degree.

She was an English teacher for the Amherst City Schools and Lorain City Schools, where she taught at Lorain High School. She also worked for the Cleveland City Schools where she taught at Jane Adams High School, which was a special school for girls. She later worked for the Elyria City Schools.

Miss Oehlke was a member of St. Mary's Church in Lorain, the Black River Historical Society and the Animal Protective League.

She loved the arts, especially painting. She played tennis and golf, and regularly attended Lorain City Council, havind an ardent interest in the goverment of Lorain. Miss Oehlke was a lover of animals.

Survivors include two nieces, Lura Ann Englehart of Scio, Ohio, and Patricia Helen Reed of Lorain; and a nephew Henry Arthur Oehlke Jr. of Vermilion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Augustus Oehlke and Mary Helen (nee Doyle); a brother Henry Arthur Oehlke Sr. in 1998; and sisters, Pauline Mary Oehlke in 1993 and Helen Virginia Oehlke in 1992.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Walter A. Frey Funeral Home, 700 West Eire Avenue in Lorain where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.
