For six seasons (1988 to 1993), he played at the running back position in the National Football League with the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Falcons and Kansas City Chiefs. He attended Springhill High School and played collegiate football at Northwestern State University where he was a standout player. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1988, when he rushed for 1,168 yards with the Patriots. Among his other career highlights include both All Pro selection and Pro Bowl status in 1988, and recipient of the Gale Sayers Humanitarian Citation. Stephens was chosen by the Patriots during the 1st round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He appeared in 88 career regular season games with 3,440 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns.
