John Buffington died at his residence in Wilmington on Monday morning June 28th at nine oclock, at the age of 81 years, seven month and 11 days.
He was born on the 17th of Nov 1818 in Dearborn Co this state. On July 1 1852 he married Eliza Jane Carbaugh. To this union three children were born, two having died in infancy, leaving the son Oscar D and one granddaughter Helen, who with the widow and numerous other relatives are left to mourn their loss.
Mr. Buffington was one of the old pioneers of this county and one of the eldest citizens of Wilmington. His occupation was that of a riverboat pilot, but on account of defective eyesight he was compelled to abandon his chosen profession many years ago. His chief delight was in describing incidents and happenings that took place on his voyages. His young friends have followed him (in imagination) on many trips down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. He was a kind husband and an honest upright citizen and was at peace with all mankind.
He was a Mason and Odd Fellow for nearly forty years and was a charter member of Dearborn Lodge No 536 IOOF. He has filled all the offices of this lodge with credit and has been its representative several times at the grand lodge.
During the ten weeks of his illness he never suffered an hour, but he realized that the end was near and put his trust in God. An hour before the summons came, having lost the power of speech, he reached for his companions hand and clasped it as tho to say goodbye.
The funeral solemnities took place at the ME Church Friday afternoon June 30, conducted by Rev. Isaac Turner assisted by Rev. MW Reef, after which the IOOF conducted their burial ceremony and deposited the remains in Wilmington Cemetery.
