Cbarles Mathis Leach was the son of Martha (Mattie) Shirley and John G. Leach. Over the years family stories were always shared at family reunion of the man family the children called "Papa". He was gone long before any of his grandchildren could ever know him. But hearing the stories about him we know was stern and strict to those children but a loving man. He was also a very Christian man, they were faithful members of the First United Methodist Church.

It seems that Charles Leach had a bit of gypsy in him. Whither it was the fact he was never happy where he was living or if it was due to the fact he needed to move to find work he moved his family every few years. My mom said they never knew when they would come home from school to find they were moving or if they would be staying where they were. She remember one day while doing her school work one of the older sisters came to get her saying "come home Papa says we're moving."

As much as they moved Charles or "Charlie" as he was known always insisted that his children have an education and he expected them to excel in school lessons even though they were in and out of school sometimes for months due to a move or helping with farm chores. Four of the 10 children went on to be teachers and if I'm not mistaken everyone of them continued their education by attending college. One child died at age two.

Charles Leach himself taught school at one time. That was where he met and married his young student, my grandmother Agnes Grutrude Mauzey Leach. Other than teaching he was a farmer.

Charles Leach died shortly after they moved to Fort Worth Texas in the 1940. So after years of moving his family from Texas to Oklahoma to Arkansas and back to Texas and Oklahoma several times my mom and her younger sister who were still young were able to stay in one place and never move again. This had to make my grandmother happy to have a little house that was hers although she never complained of moving all those many years.
