Spc. Tyler R. Walshe, 21, of Shasta California. Although not legally adopted, Tyler had taken the name of his step-father Paul Vietti who raised him since age 3. The Army lists him under his birth surname, Walshe.
Tyler enlisted on October 26, 2006 at Portland, Oregon. He reported to Fort Benning, Ga. for initial entry training on Nov. 17, 2006. Upon graduation, he reported Fort Lewis, Wa. on March 17, 2007, where he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July, 2009. This was his first deployment. Tyler died Aug. 31 in southern Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. His civilian and military education includes a high school diploma (2006), and the Military Occupational Specialty 11B: Infantryman qualification course (2007). His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
