PETTIGREW - John Vernon, 1908-2003 passed away peacefully on October 29, 2003. Vern was predeceased by his parents and twelve siblings; his wife Jean (nee Saunderson) and her parents, and by his eldest son Robert. He is survived by his three children: son, Don (Yvette) and their children, Beth, Debbie and David; daughter, Heather (Jim); son, Ron (Lorrie) and their children Geoff, Mitch and Becky; also Robert's children, Gordon, Carma, Sandra and Danny; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Vern was born in Ontario and moved with his family to farm near Biggar. Biggar remained close to his heart until the end of his life. He moved to Regina and attended Central Collegiate. He was a Stone Mason and then a member of the Regina Fire Department for 33 years, retiring in 1973 as Battalion Chief, then went on to work part-time at Lee Funeral Home. He was an amateur wrestler and won six Canadian and ten Saskatchewan Championships. He was inducted into the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada Hall of Fame, the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame. He represented Canada in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He was featured in a full page article in the Leader Post on July 16, 1996. Vern enjoyed his grandchildren, his time at St. Andrews United Church, his time at his cottage at Lumsden Beach, golfing, bike riding which he did until the age of 93, bird watching, reciting poems and bridge. He was always busy working on one project or another. He was a loving husband who cared for his wife, Jean during her 28 year illness. He was there for his children, always ready to lend a helping hand. The Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at St. Andrews United Church, 1475 Athol St., Regina, SK with Rev. Howard Hanson officiating.
