After serving in the US Army, he landed in New York, where performed in the play "Born Yesterday". He made his big screen debut in "Winged Victory", followed by the memorable role as Colonel Ernie Davenport in "Twelve O'Clock High" (1949). His other film credits include "All About Eve" (1950), "A Blue Print for Murder" (1953), "Bermuda Affair" (1956), "Crash Landing" (1958) and "Mysterious Island" (1961). For television, he appeared on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Zane Gray Theatre", "The Reporter", "The Outer Limits" and many more. He died of cancer at the age of 74 in Falmouth, Maine and also was the fourth husband of actress Bette Davis.
