Death Comes to Mrs. Steinbrink After Long Illness
Death came to Mrs. Phoebe Steinbrink Friday at 1 o'clock at her home in Elwood, at the age of 68 years, three months and 16 days, following a long illness. In 1938 she became afflicted with arthritis and was confined to a wheel chair until 16 months ago when she became bedfast and since that time had slowly declined in health.
Phoebe Lewis was born in Cass county, Nebr., November 27, 1877. With her parents she moved to a farm in Phelps county about 1882 where she grew to womanhood. On November 10, 1898 she was united in marriage to Fred E. Steinbrink of Elwood. To this union were born ten children, George H. of Loomis, Mrs. Dewey Smith of Elwood, Mrs. C. H. Dreher of Hastings, Miss Elda Steinbrink of North Platte, Leo E., Velma, Charles F., and Earl, all of Elwood, who survive her. She is also survied by three stepchildren, James C., of Kenesaw, Mrs. B. B. Laughter of Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. Emil Dreher, of Elwood, She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away January 3, 1942, and two children, and infant son and a daughter, Emily.
She is also survied by three brothers, James Lewis of Lewellen, George Lewis of Loomis, Oliver Lewis of North Platte, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Carlisle of North Platte; 21 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Steinbrink with her husband resided on a farm in Brace precint, 8 miles northwest of Elwood, for 44 years. Following the death of her husband she moved to Elwood where she had since lived.
In childhood she attended the Urbana church near her home in Phelps county and later united with the Christian church of Elwood, She was a faithful follower and her faith in her Lord gave her the courage and the strength to endure her suffering. In her long illness she was always cheerful and patient, and never complained or spoke unkindly to anyone.
Last rites were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian church, with Rev. Brownfield in charge. Mrs. Keith Leggott, Mrs. Wesley Fong, J. L. McKenzie and George Baisinger, accompanied by Mrs. J. B. Chambers, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "Old Rugged Cross," and Under His Wings." Interment was made in the Elwood Cemetery.
