Mrs. Ida Moore Small, wife of Len Small, governor of Illinois, died at her home here today.
Mrs. Small was stricken late Saturday with an attack of apoplexy and paralysis resulting from the bursting of a blood vessel in her brain. The attack followed her return home from Waukegan where a jury Saturday afternoon had acquitted Gov. Small of charges of conspiracy to embezzle state funds.
Physicians directly attributed her death to the strain under which she labored during the indictment and trial of Gov. Small.
Gov. Small and their children were at the beside when death came. Physicians feared the shock of his wife's death following the ordeal of his trial might also prove too great for the governor to endure.
A bulletin issued early today said "Mrs. Small's breathing is extremely labored and her heart action is barely perceptible. The end is only a matter of a short time."
Gov. and Mrs. Small returned here late Saturday after a jury at Waukegan had vindicated the governor of charges of conspiring to defraud the state of hundreds of thousands of dollars of interest funds. They were joyously greeted by hundreds of citizens of Kankakee, where they have lived ever since their marriage.
After the reception given them, Mrs. Small suddenly collapsed. Physicians were summoned and it was found that a blood vessel in the brain had broken. She sank into a state of coma and physicians immediately said there was scant hope for her recovery.
Gov. Small and attending physicians attributed Mrs. Small's breakdown to the strain she has undergone during the long weeks when her husband was on trial.
"Thank God she has lived to see vindicated," said the governor. Dr. W.A. Stoker and Dr. E.G. Wilson, who were summoned, said she would have lived a long time but for the trial in Waukegan.
Mrs. Small had staunchly supported her husband during the time of his indictment and trial. In an exclusive interview given International News Service several weeks ago, she declared they can not drown him. Saturday, she said, was the happiest day of her life.
