Birth: Jan. 23, 1852
Death: Jul. 21, 1927

Mention was made last week of the death of John W. Bixby which occurred
Thursday morning too late to secure an obituary before going to press. Mr.
Bixby's death followed a long illness which began when he was stricken with
paralysis nearly two years ago. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at
2 p.m. at the M.E. church conducted by Rev. W.D. Crewdon. Interment was made in
Walnut Grove cemetery.
John W. Bixby was born in Celsea [sic], Vermont, February 8, 1864 and was
seventy three years, five months and thirteen days old at the time of his death
which occurred July 21, 1927. Mr. Bixby had long been a prominent figure in
Adams county, having lived here for sixty nine years. He first came to Adams
county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bixby when he was only four years
old. A group of neighbors from Vermont accompanied the family here and they all
settled in Nevinville. Later the Bixby family moved to Quincy and later followed
the county seat to Corning. The subject of this sketch graduated in law at the
Iowa State University in 1875 and came immediately to Corning where he practiced
law until the time of his illness two years ago. September 1, 1881 he was
married to Miss Francis Pierce, who survives him and who so tenderly watched
over him and cared for him during his long illness. Four children survive, these
being: Mrs. Minnie Suydam of Billings, Montana, Hazel and John of Corning and
Charles R. of Miniare [sic], Nebraska.
With the passing of Mr. Bixby another link is broken which ties the
community to the romance and adventure of pioneers days. His fine mind and
splendid memory has made him authority on the events of early days and he has
done much to keep fresh the memories of pioneer days. He was twice elected to
the office of county attorney and finished his last term only a short time
before his illness.
His life in the community covered a period of sixty-nine years which is a
long time to live and serve in one community. He was for forty-five years a
member of the Masonic lodge and he was laid to rest with the rites of this
order. He united with the Federated church and was a member at the time of his
death.
Many friends both old and new join with the sorrowing family in their
grief. His kind hearted generosity was an established fact among those who knew
him and his jovial disposition was apparent to the most casual acquaintance.
