Albert Alexander McCutchan was the son of James McCutchan and his second wife Elizabeth Kirkpatrick. He married Margaret Rebecca McCutchan on 23 May 1839 and had 8 known children: Mary Elizabeth, Rachel, Phebe, James R., Rice Bolar, Fannie Florence, Grace Etta and Thomas "Mack" McClung.

On the 1850 District 53, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found (his father) farmer James McCutchan, 74; farmer ALBERT A., 33; Margaret R., 27; Mary E., 8; Rachel A., 6; Phebe C., 5; James R., 8/12 plus (no occupation listed) Nancy McClung, 40, all Virginia born.

On the 1860 Dist. 6, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found farmer Abert A McCutcheon (sic), 45, with $3960 in. real estate; Margaret McCutcheon, 38; Mary E McCutcheon, 18; Rachel McCutcheon, 16; Pheby McCutcheon, 14; Rice McCutcheon, 6; Fanny McCutcheon, 5; Gracetta McCutcheon, 3; Thomas McCutcheon, 1; Thomas R McCutcheon, 41 and Wm McCutcheon, 13.

Died, at his residence on Timberridge, in the 52nd year of his age, Mr. Albert McCutchan, of this county. The heart of the whole community was deeply stirred when it was announced that "Albert McCutchan is dead." In all the relations of life, as a husband, a father, a neighbor and citizen, he exhibited those traits of character, which are sure to gain the respect and love of the wise and the good. Industrious kind, useful, good-— are words that describe his character.— Moreover he was a man of prayer. The family altar and the Church will miss him. The community will miss him. The poor wilt miss him. But alas! there are bleeding hearts that will miss him still more deeply. But listen to that gentle voice— Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me." Published in the Lexington Gazette (Virginia), dated 15 Feb 1865 (see photo).

Other McCutchans on his 4 sided monument include James R., Fannie, and Margaretta.

Based on the age at his death on this gravestone (48 years and 6 months), he was born ABOUT May 1816.
