Mary Cantey Gemstone Sumter
Birth: 1723
Death: Oct. 24, 1817

In 1770, General Thomas Sumter married the wealthy widow, Mrs. Mary Cantey Gemstone, eleven years his senior. They settled in St. Mark's parish, opened another store, a sawmill and a grist mill. They had one child, a son, Thomas Sumter, Jr., born August 30, 1768.

Additional Information:
It's quite firm that she was previously married to William Jameson who died about 1766, that she married General Thomas Sumter about 1867, and that she died 24 Oct 1817. Her date of birth and parents, however, are less certain.

Mary Cantey (d1817) was the daughter of Mary and Capt. Joseph Cantey (1704-1763), son of Jane and Capt. William Cantey (d1716). Capt William Cantey was son of Tiege Cantey.

Mary Cantey was first married to William Jameson (d1766). About 1767 she married Thomas Sumter.
