| Birth: | Oct. 14, 1882 New York New York County New York, USA | | Death: | Aug. 29, 1975 |  Irish nationalist of Spanish and Irish descent. Joined the IRB (Fenians) in 1913. Commanded Bolands Mills during the 1916 Easter Rising. Court-marshalled and sentenced to death, but repreived. Elected President of a 'reformed' Sinn Fein in 1917. Rearrested in 1918, escaped from Lincoln Prison(England) in 1919 and elected President of the Frist Dail (Parliament). Visited USA 1919-20, raising a loan of $6m. Opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, and was replaced as President by Arthur Griffith. On the losing side in the ensuing Civil War (during which some think that de Valera connived at the death of Michael Collins. By 1932 de Valera's Fianna Fail party obtained a majority in the Dail, and De Valera became President of the Executive Council. During WW II maintained Irish neutrality and continued a strong anti-IRA policy. Over the next few years was in and out of power before being elected President in 1959 (re-elected 1966).
