Jesse Bernard Andrews, age 85, Elizabethton, passed away peacefully Friday morning, August 28, 2009 at his residence in the Valley Forge Community where he had made his home for fifty-three years. He was born in the Elk Mills Community, the first of six children born to the late Alvin G. and Sarah Matilda Walsh Andrews. Mr. Andrews was a member of the Valley Forge United Methodist Church, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher. He was a graduate of Watauga Academy, Old Butler and East Tennessee State Teachers College. Many people knew Mr. Andrews best in his role as an educator in Carter and Washington Counties. He was a teacher, counselor and principal, having held positions in Elk Mills Elementary, Poga Elementary, Hampton High, Happy Valley Elementary and Cloudland High Schools over a span of thirty-four years. Mr. Andrews also worked approximately four years with the local Department of Human Services. During many summers, he enjoyed traveling the region as a crop hail insurance adjuster. Mr. Andrews served in the Philippines with US Army Air Force as an airplane mechanic during WWII. During his service to his country he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, AP Theater Ribbon with a Silver Service Star and a Bronze Service Star, the WWII Victory Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a Bronze Star. After retiring as an educator, he became active in Gideons International.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Andrews was preceded in death by his wife: Virginia Blanche Lunceford Andrews, one infant sister, one infant brother: William Ray Andrews and his youngest brother: James C. "Jim" Andrews.

Mr. Andrews' survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Ginny and Eddie McGee, Gail and John Bradley, all of Elizabethton, four granddaughters: Gina McGee, Elizabethton, Rebekah Bowers and husband Brian, Johnson City, Janeen Bradley, Lauren Bradley, both of Elizabethton, four great-grandchildren: Josh Burrow, Travis Webb, both of Elizabethton, Ashlyn Bowers, Alaina Bowers, both of Johnson City, and two brothers and three sisters-in-law: Will H. and Eleanor Andrews, Elizabethton, Dennis W. and Bernetta Andrews, Glen Burnie, MD and Lynn Kay Andrews, Elizabethton. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Andrews will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, August 29th in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. Music will be provided by Lauren Bradley, Kelly Miller and Mary Lou O'Quinn.

There will be two occasions for visitation by friends. The first visitation will be from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the funeral home and again following the funeral service in the chapel. Friends may also call at the residence at other times.

The committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 30th in Butler Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating. Everyone attending is welcome to meet the family at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post No. 49. Active pallbearers will be John Andrews, Jeff Andrews, James Andrews, David Andrews, Steven Andrews, Randy Andrews, Brian Bowers and Lucas Penix. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Herbert Ladley and the staff of Cardiovascular Associates, PC, Kingsport, Karen Welch PA-C and Sherri Miller, RN with the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, his many friends who gathered for fellowship at McDonald's and Nancy's Kitchen and his neighbors on Sunshine Circle.

It was Mr. Andrews' request that memorial donations be made to Gideons International, P. O. Box 1951, Elizabethton, TN 37644 or American Heart Association, 3101 Brown's Mill Road, Johnson City, Tennessee, 37604, rather than floral arrangements. Information will be available at the funeral home for these memorial gifts.
