John Mitchell Barton was married at least three times. He first married Mary Elizabeth Haddix, daughter of David Haddix and Sarah 'Sally' Tingley, known as "Lizzie," on April 14, 1859, in Clark Co., Illinois. They had three children together: Ida Doreltha (1859-1936); Rose Edward 'Peat' (1861-1948) and Jerome Smith (1863-1936). Lizzie died while in her early 20s, either while giving birth to their third child Jerome (Rome), or shortly thereafter, it is unknown if the birth of Jerome was a factor in her early passing, or whether the timing of her passing was coincidental to the timing of his birth. (Mary Elizabeth was the mother of all of John Mitchell Barton's biological children.)

Next he married, Cynthia Ann Medley (nee Savoree), on December 17, 1864 in Clark Co., Illinois. They were divorced in 1878, with the papers having been filed in Smith Co., Kansas. At the time of the divorce, they had not lived together for many years. NOTE: Cynthia was married five time, John was her 2nd husband. [At least two of her marriages, after her marriage to John, were bigamist - perhaps even all three of them. Her husbands, in marriage order: James Medley/Matton 15 Jun 1858, Clark Co., IL; John M. Barton, 1878; William Fuller on 10 Jun 1866, possibly in Clark Co., IL; Lewis B. "Sherman" Ingram on 30 Mar 1873 in Clark Co., IL; and Benjamin Franklin Powers on 26 Jun 1878 in Knox Co., Indiana. It appears that Cynthia Ann had three children, all with her last husband, Benjamin F. Powers, one died young. Two sons lived into their 60s.]

John may have married a woman named Catherine Lowe on the 12 Apr 1866, in Vigo Co., Indiana (if true, he would have married Catherine while still being married to Cynthia).

Based on the timing of the divorce from Cynthia, it is pretty clear that John divorced Cynthia Ann to clear the way for his marriage to Nancy B. Glenn-Fruit-Jones, his third (or fourth) and final wife.

Nancy had been married two times before her marriage to John. All of her children were fathered by her first husband Enoch Fruit, they were married on on July 18, 1847 in DeWitt Co., IL. Fruit was a casualty of the Civil War. Her second husband was Napoleon B. Jones, they married on April 28, 1867 in DeWitt Co., Illinois. He died just a little over a year after they married.

Nancy and John had actually been together for a number of years before marrying. John was listed on Nancy's 1870c as a hired hand, shortly there after the two of them moved to the Smith and Jewell county areas in Kansas.

Until after John and Nancy married, they never actually lived together as a couple. Nancy always has a separate residence (John was listed as living in Nancy's household on her 1870 census, but not as a couple - he was her hired hand at the time). They were married on October 7, 1879 in Smith Co., Kansas.
