Henry Dixon Bowman
A Friend's Tribute to a Venerable Patriot, Soldier and Citizen
A devoted wife and eight children and hundreds of friends are weeping over the newly made grave of Henry Dixon Bowman. His death comes as a great shock to the community, he being in as good health as usual when he left his home and went to Benchley. He remained in town for some time greeting and talking with friends, and on his way home was suddenly seized and fell dead in the road where he was found a few minutes later by Dr. R.H. Harrison of Bryan and Paul Merks of Benchley. In his death we have lost a man of high moral character and a stalwart citizen.
Mr. Bowman was born in Marshal County, Miss. Feb 18th, 1835 At the age of 10 years he removed with his father, Thomas Bowman to Texas and has been a resident of this state ever since.
At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in Company I, Parson's Brigade of Texas, and served gallantly throughout the war.
He was first married to Miss Samantha Henry and to them were born two children, Mrs. Emma Bodenhammer of Lampasas and Frank Bowman who died several years ago.
After the death of his first wife he was married to Miss Beal and to them were born seven children as follows: Glen Bowman, Mrs. Roe Doerge of Navasota, Henry, Craig, John, Watson and Pencry (sp Pencey) Bowman of this community.
He was a member of the Christian church and lived a devoted Christian life. Ripe in years, rich in faith, experienced of grace, and faithful in life, he answered the joyful message and his spirit upon angelic wings with raptuous delight soared to the mansions above, there to bear the welcome plaudit, "come thou blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you".
He was laid tenderly to rest Thursday afternoon in Prospect cemetery. To the bereaved family and relatives we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
His tolls are over,
His work is done,
He has fought a good fight,
The victory is won.
