Birth: unknown
Suffolk County
New York, USA
Death: 1806
Morris County
New Jersey, USA

Nathan Howell is the founder of my Howell family in Chester, Morris County, New Jersey. DNA now proves that Nathan was a descendent of Richard Howell of Southold, Long Island.

Date of Death above is based on tax records and not on the date given in the book Early Germans of New Jersey which is believed to be in error by several researchers.

Tax record in 1806 shows Nathan Howell owning 130 acres, 3 horses and six cows. In 1807 Nathan Howell is no longer on the tax rolls but his wife Sarah Howell is listed. In addition he died without a will but his property was inventoried in 12/30/1806.

Nathan Howell in 1760 bought land in Roxbury, later called Washington township and then Chester Township.

There is no grave stone for Nathan. However, due to very strong evidence my family places him in this cemetery.

Nathan married Sarah Youngs on 8 Mar 1757 (Salmon Records), the couple moved to Morris County area of New Jersey. Early Germans of New Jersey lists Nathan Howell on page 204 as buying a farm in 1760. This is only one year after he inherited land from his grandfather Isaac. "Nathan Howell bought a farm at Hacklebarney of Johannes Haas in 1760." Nathan Howell and Sarah Youngs children were:

Isaac Howell
Abraham Howell
Israel Howell
Joshua Howell
Joseph Howell
Sarah Howell she married Reuben Gest (Guest)
Caleb Howell

I am a direct male descendent of Nathan Howell through his son Isaac. The direct line is as follows - Nathan/Isaac/Isaac/Frederick/Moses/William/William/Steven. My DNA test proves that this Nathan Howell is a descendent of Richard Howell of Southold, Long Island. This Nathan Howell is mentioned in the book Early Germans of New Jersey. The book Early German of New Jersey by Chambers doesn't list the origins of Nathan Howell. Please contact me if you have questions in regards to the Howell's of Morris County, New Jersey.

Currently I am trying to compile a list of Nathan's grandchildren so a clear line of decent is available to future researchers. If you can contribute by telling us who his grandchidren are please contact me at I am also interested in details about Nathan's children - who they married, where they lived, where they are buried, etc.
