William enlisted 22 Feb 1862 and reported for duty the same day at Shelby Springs, Ala was assigned to Company D 28th Ala. Capt. Gamble's Co., Frazer's Reg't, Alabama, Volunteers. Captured by Union Army forces under the command of Maj. Gen. Thomas during "a skirmish" near Chattanooga on Nov. 24, 1862. Sent to Rock Island Confederate Prison Oct 6, 1864 to Nov 7, 1865. Enlisted Oct 6, 1865 in Union Army for Frontier Service, a "Galvanized Yankee" in western AR, southwestern MO and southern KS.

William married Ellender York, 25 Feb 1865. To this union were born:
