Johann Nepomuk David
Birth: Nov. 30, 1895
Death: Dec. 22, 1977

Composer. Born in Eferding, Upper Austria, he studied at the monastery of St. Florian near Linz, and graduated from the Vienna Academy in 1923. He spent much of his long career as an academic, with professorships at the conservatories of Leipzig (1934 to 1945), Salzburg (1945 to 1948), and Stuttgart (1948 to 1963). David identified with no particular school and his style was an energetic synthesis of modern and traditional modes; he also found inspiration in Lutheranism and visual media. Today he is best known for his organ music. His 21-volume "Das Choralwerk" (1932 to 1974) is a monumental survey of that instrument's 20th Century practice. In addition he wrote eight symphonies, of which the Fifth (1951) is considered the finest, three Violin Concertos (1952, 1957, 1961) an Organ Concerto (1965), Flute Concerto (1936), the "German Mass" for mixed chorus (1952), and several chamber pieces. His son Thomas Christian David was also a noted composer. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
