Mary was a daughter of William Herritt, born in Holland in 1790 and died in 1849, and his wife Elizabeth 'Betty' Tomb, [1802 - 1885], a daughter of Jacob Tomb Jr. [1775 - 1802] and his wife Sarah Campbell Ross. William and Betty owned and operated the Half Way House Inn, an important stop for commercial traffic going up to Lake Erie. It was located near Loch Haven on the Coudersport - Jersey Shore Turnpike. It burned down in the 1970's and the Black Forest Inn now stands in that spot.
