Ireta Mortimer Baker, daughter of William John and Mary Maria Harding Mortimer, passed away August 7, 2003 in Logan, Utah. Ireta was born in Provo, Utah, on June 29, 1909.
She was educated at Franklin Elementary School, Provo High School, and Brigham Young University, where she received a bachelor's degree in Clothing and Textiles, with a minor in English. For two years she was a teacher in Minersville, Utah, covering a wide variety of subjects, including typewriting, physical education, English, general science, literature, and sewing.
She married Jesse Baker on January 16, 1932, in Beaver, Utah, the marriage later being sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Jesse and Ireta ran a Grade A dairy business with their family and lived in Minersville, North Logan, and Beaver, where they spent the last nearly fifty years.
Ireta was a talented singer and pianist and composed the centennial song for Beaver in 1956. In addition to serving in numerous music assignments, she gave decades of church service, including positions in Family History and the Relief Society.
Ireta and Jesse are the parents of six children: Kenneth (Savanna) Baker, Logan, Utah; Jerene (Gerald) Weeks, Logan, Utah; Phyllis (Marvin) White, Auburn, Washington; Douglas (Lois) Baker, McAllen, Texas; William (Jean) Baker, Springville, Utah; and Carol (Rodney) Black, Orem, Utah.
Their posterity also includes 40 grandchildren, 114 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. Ireta was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 11, 2003 at 10:00 am in the Logan 13th Ward Chapel, 100 East 200 South, Logan. A viewing will be held from 9:00 - 9:45 am at the church. Interment will be in the Beaver, Utah Cemetery.
