CHINA -- Phyllis H. Crabtree, 89, of the Neck Road, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. Born Oct. 15, 1918, in Union, she was the daughter of Vivian and Hattie (Bills) Hannan. At the age of 4, her mother died. Her father met and married Estella Morine, who became Phyllis' wonderful "Mum." Together, Viv and Stella raised their nine children.
Phyllis attended Union schools and graduated from Union High School, where she met her future husband, Kenneth Crabtree. On April 29, 1939, they got married in Union.
Ken and Phyllis eventually settled in Fairfield where Ken worked many years for Keyes Fibre. They raised their three children there.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, in 1989; her parents and stepmother; sisters, Dot Young, Edna Linscott and Pearl Beck; and brothers, Philip Morine, Vivian "Junior" Hannan and Stewart Hannan. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law, Charles Williams.
Survivors include daughters, Joan Williams of Auburn, and Diann McGraw and her husband, Steve, of Waterville; son, Frank Crabtree and his wife, Cindy (Churchill) of Turner; grandchildren, Pamela (Williams) and her husband, Ted Callinan, of Sebago, Kelly (Williams) and her husband, Paul Harriman, of Gorham, Gregory Williams and his wife, Jane (Landry), of Auburn, Amy (Williams) and her husband, Sean Callinan, of Hudson, Mass., Erin (McGraw) and her husband, Kriss Kliegle, of Kensington, N.H., Andrew Crabtree and his wife, Jennifer (Lohne), of Canton, Conn., and Brian Crabtree, currently studying in Israel. Survivors also include her nine great-grandchildren, with another great-granddaughter due on Oct. 1. Phyllis is also survived by her sisters, Dorothy Robinson of South Portland and Geraldine Winchenback of Waldoboro; many sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the China Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronald Morrell officiating. Burial will follow at the China Village Extension Cemetery.
