Peggy Chappell Barber, 77, of East Bank passed away August 23, 2009, at home after a short illness. Peggy was born in Crown Hill, and was the oldest of six siblings. She married the "love of her life", Billy J. Barber, and together, they traveled the world wherever his military career would send them next. They retired and resided in East Bank. Peggy graduated from McMillan Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1952, as a registered nurse and her career spanned over 30 years, which concluded in 1994 with one of her most rewarding positions as night supervising R.N. at the Arthur B. Hodges Center in Charleston. Her staff and friends from Arthur B. Hodges Center have continued to reward her life. The family would like express a special word of thanks to Peggy's extended family from Arthur B. Hodges Center for all the care, cards, visits, flowers, calls and love you have given. Words can never express our appreciation. Peggy touched so many lives and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. One of Peggy's greatest pleasures in life was spending time with her only granddaughter, Alyssa "Allie" Hughes. Peggy and Bill were both so proud of their "babedoll" and impacted her life by teaching her the importance of an education. Allie is now in her third year at Marshall University with a G.P.A. of 4.0, making her "Nana" very proud. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Worth Littleton Chappell and Hattie Mae Chappell; her beloved husband of over 50 years, Billy J. Barber; and brother, James H. Chappell. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Reta M. Hughes and her life partner, John D. Nelson; granddaughter, Alyssa L. Hughes; sisters, Patty J. Hammond of Georgia and Mary A. McCay of Pennsylvania; brothers, Worth L. Chappell Jr. of South Carolina and Earnest L. Chappell of West Virginia. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, in the Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Glasgow, with Ginger Marshall officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston, WV 25312. Peggy wanted to give a special thank you to the caregivers, nurses and doctors of HospiceCare that give so much to the patient and surviving family members. Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank, is in charge of arrangements.
