US Navy Admiral. Born Ralph Wynne Cousins, he was raised in Michigan and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1937 becoming a Navy pilot in 1940. During World War II, he serving aboard the USS Lexington when it was sunk in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. He was awarded the Navy Cross when he led dive-bombing attacks against a Japanese aircraft carrier. In the post-war years he helped devise the Navy's nuclear and submarine programs. During the Vietnam War he was Commander of the Attack Carrier Strike Force and was responsible for all naval aviation missions carried out from aircraft carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin. Cousins attained the rank of four-star admiral in 1970. From 1972 until his retirement from the Navy in 1975, he served as Commander of the US Atlantic Fleet and was Supreme Allied Commander of NATO Forces. In 1975, he joined Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company and served as president starting in 1977; two years later he established the Tenneco Europe company and moved to London, where he remained until his retirement in 1985.
