MRS. CLARA HECKMAN
Mrs. Clara (Hixson) Heckman, wife of W. Clair Heckman of 1210 Liberty St., Saxton, passed away at ther home at 4:40 a.m. today, January 19, 1960. She had been critically ill for the past three months.
She was a daughter of George W. & Isabelle Bealty Hixson and was born at Crystal Springs on Nov. 11, 1889.
In 1923 she was uniited in marriage to W. Clair Heckman and they resided in Wells Tannery until 1928, when they moved to Huntingdon. Following Mr. Heckman's retirement, they lived in Wells Tannery for two years, later moving to Saxton, when she became a partial invalid. She was a seamstress and had many friends in the Huntingdon area.
Mrs. Heckman is survived by her husband; one daughter Mrs. James Benner (Mary Louise) of Saxton; and one son Lt. Donald C. Heckman USN, a member of the staff at the U. S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. Four grandsons also survive, along with two brothers, N. Hixson of Wilkinsburg; N. Grand Hixson of Tyrone and Mrs. Hugh L. (Margaret) Carey of Petersburg, R.D. Two sisters and two brothers preceded her in death.
The deceased was a member of the Wells Valley Methodist Church.
Mrs. Heckman was handicapped from the age of 10 years, when in an accident at Emmavill, she was scalped. After 70 weeks in the Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia, she emerged as the first patient medical science was successful in grafting ski8n over the entire skull. Five years ago, as a result of the former accident she underwent two major & several minor operation in the Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh for a malignant brain tumor, at which time one - fourth of the skull bone was removed. Her stay covered five months and again askin grafting was necessary. Always a wonderful patient, she was called Sister Clara by the nurses and doctors and termed their miracle patient. Although one hand and arm were paralysed, she enjoyed reading her Bible and keeping up with current events. She never complained and accepted all her illness cheerfully.
Friends will be received at the Masood funeral chapel in Saxton and funeral services will be Thursday, January 21, with the Rev. Neil Albright, pastor of the Saxton Methodist Church will officiate, and burial will be in the Wells Valley Methodist Cemetery.
