Neva Verneil (Besco) Stephens was born May 15, 1922 in rural Taylor County, IA, near Platteville the daughter of Henry Besco and Ethel (Deaver) Besco. She grew up attending school and graduated from the Conway High School, with the Class of 1940, where she had served as Class President. She then taught rural school for one year. While singing, playing music and square dancing in the country school she met her future husband, Orville Stephens. The couple was united in marriage on May 24, 1941 in Maryville, MO. Two daughters were born to bless this union June and Judy.
In 1947 the couple moved north of Bedford to their present home. She was an active part of the farming business and piano business with her husband Orville. Together they enjoyed traveling and square dancing. Verneil was a tireless worker and officer in many organizations such as Order of the Eastern Star, Rainbow, Past Matrons, Lioness, Mizpah Club, 20th Century Club and Church Women United. She was a life-time member of the Taylor County Historical Society and active at the museum. She volunteered for many things such as Bingo at the American Legion Club and delivering Meals on Wheels. Verneil was an active member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir and at funerals. She was a Deacon at the church and helped her dear friend, Ellen Lemke, with music at the nursing home at times.
Left to cherish Verneil's memory are her two daughters June Park and husband Harold of Bedford; and Judy Bentley of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren, Craig Lock and wife Carmelita; Jerry Lock; and Steve Bentley and wife Elizabeth; seven great-grandchildren, Colby Lock, Chris Lock, Craig Lock, Nicole Lock, Courtney Lock, Mason Lock and Alaina Bentley; one great-great-grandson, Carson Lock; a brother-in-law, Gene Becherer; and a sister-in-law, Doris Coon; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends in the community.
Preceding Verneil in death are parents; her husband Orville in 1986; a sister Nadine Becherer; and two sisters-in-law Letha Schurr and Elva Akers.
The family feels that Verneil wanted to be with her husband Orville for her birthday. We will all miss her, but know she is in a better place with God and Orville.
May God grant comfort and strength to those who mourn Verneil's passing.
