Thomas Rath. Sr., Rose From Office Boy to Plant Head
Thomas Rath, Sr., 74, pioneer in the stove business and manger of the American Stove Co. branch in Lorain for 23 years, died in St. Joseph's Hospital at 1:15 a.m. today after a lengthy illness.
Rath who worked his way up from office boy to manager, and later became national advertising director of the American Stove Co., had a record of 57 consecutive years of service at the time of his retirement in 1937.

Born in Cleveland, Rath got his first job at the age of 14 with the Hull Vapor Stove Co..
In a few years he became bookkeeper and when the company moved moved its entire business to Lorain, 1883 Rath moved with it.
In 1906 four years after the stove company was taken over by the American Stove Co., Rath was named manager. Because his best salesman left, Rath was forced to hit the road to acquaint new men with the territory.
During the next four years he averaged more than 25,000 miles per year on the road. It was under his direction that experiments were carried on with the Lorain oven heat regulator and within three years the other five divisions of the company were manufacturing the Lorain-equipped gas ranges.
It was Rath who inaugurated national adverting for the American Stove. Co., in 1919 and from that time until his retirement he headed that department. Under his direction the advertising department grew from one person to 15.
He maintained two jobs until 1929 when he gave up the managership and for the next seven years devoted his whole time to advertising.
