Grace's parents both died in 1900 when she was only 5 years old so she lived with her brother, John T. Riddle and his wife Vaula. They lived in Lubbock, Texas for a time and then moved to Roosevelt County, New Mexico where she met and married David Crockett Garner in 1915.
