On Thursday evening, March 10, Albert Bulter [sic] Ferris, a lifelong resident of Atwater passed on, aged 94 years. He was the last surviving member of a family of ten sons and daughters born to Riley and Mary Lockwood Ferris. Born on a farm half a mile west of Five Corners on March 17, 1833, Mr. Ferris made his lifelong residence within a few rods of his birthplace. In the development of Southern Cayuga and Northern Tompkins counties, Mr. Ferris has
lived to witness many changes in this fertile section. Learning the trade of carpentry in his early life, Mr. Ferris for many years successfully engaged in the contracting and building field. A great number of the older and substantial homes and public structures in
various towns in this section are still living evidences of his careful handiwork. Such structures as the Newell Franklin home on the Lake road, at Aurora, the John Tillotson home also at Aurora were built by him. Other homes in nearby neighborhoods erected by him are those of William Davis at Lake Ridge and the William Campbell home on the Lake road in Tompkins county and the Luther Hedden home at Lansingville. In and about King Ferry, Mr. Ferris did much work erecting the homes of Richard Ryder, Arthur Slocum, Samuel Adams, Samuel Barger, William Goodyear and
others. In the erection and the remodeling of many public structures, Mr. Ferris showed his aptitude of craftsmanship. He remodeled the Presbyterian church at
King Ferry also built the present chapel used by that congregration. The Methodist church at Lansingville and the Presbyterian church at Genoa were remodeled by him. Many years ago he built his own home and that of his
deceased brother, Lockwood Ferris in Five Corners. These representative structures are in a fine state of preservation and are evidences of the care and precision he gave to his work. In many of his earlier building securities he was assisted by his late brother, Edmund Ferris, long a resident of Poplar Ridge. While Mr. Ferris never held public office, he was long a member of the Third Presbyterian church of Five Corners of which he was treasurer for a period of thirty-six years. He has acted as superintendent and treasurer of Maplewood Cemetery association for fifty-six years. His largely attended funeral was held on Sunday, March 13, in the church of
his early boyhood, the Third Presbyterian, the officiating clergyman being Rev. S. C. Page of King Ferry. Interment was in Maplewood cemetery. Mr. Ferris leaves surviving him, his widow, Lillian H. Ferris and four nephews, George L. Ferris of Atwater, Mills Ferris of Moravia, Glenn E. Ferris of Ithaca and Frederick D. Ferris of Rochester.
