Dedicated to my 5th Great-grandfather

NOTE: As explained below, research records for my 5th great grandfather are found in various spellings of the surname. The original surname was MULHOLLAND but perhaps due to the many misspelling of the name, by the late 1700s, the entire family was known by the surname of HOLLAND.

James Mulholland was born in Belegaley/Ballygauley, County Tyrone, Ireland in 1733. He came to America and settled in Oakham, Worcester, Massachusetts. On 19 June 1755, in the adjacent town of Rutland, Worcester, Massachusetts, he married Mary Bell, daughter of James and Martha (Crawford) Bell. About 1769 the family moved from Oakham to Murrayfield (now Chester, Hampden, Massachusetts) where he settled on Holcomb Hill.

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War [records show his name as Mulhollen]. Sources indicate that he was a man of strong religious and political convictions and was accustomed to speaking his mind freely.

One of James Mulholland (Holland) assignments was to travel to Saratoga, New York after the defeat of General Burgoyne and bring the captured British soldiers back to the Springfield area where he was replaced and the soliders continued eastward where they were to be deported to England. The column stopped for one night in Chester, Massachusetts to bed down for the night. The night Nancy Mulholland, daughter of James, age 16 was one of the women serving dinner to the British soldiers, and David Cross became enamored and escaped from the column and returned to Chester to work for James Holland and marry her. See the memorial to David Cross who became his son-in-law for futher information.

After the death of his wife, Mary, in Chester, Hampden, Massachusetts, he moved to Fulton, Oswego, New York with his daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Daniel Falley, where he died 20 September 1820.
