Arthur Henry Matson, 65, of Baker City, died at home on Aug. 10, 2009. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Matson was born on Sept. 23, 1943, in Astoria, to Walfred and Irene (Loke) Matson. He graduated from Knappa High School in 1961 and also attended Clatsop Community College in Astoria.
During the 1960s he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He worked in design and engineering fields with Tektronix and Wauna Paper Mill in Astoria. At Tektronix, he designed a test instrument push button switch that was patented.
He also designed and built several houses near Astoria and, right out of college, was the head construction surveyor for a new ten-mile water supply pipeline for Astoria.
He enjoyed building, reading and gold mining history. A member of the Easter Oregon Miner's Association, he enjoyed studying the geology of Eastern Oregon and was working on a book about Eastern Oregon gold mining at the time of his death.
He loved to hunt, fish and hike in the hills and mountains until health issues prevented it. He lived in John Day around 2004, where he was a member of the Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, John.
