Sculptor. He was the designer of many war memorials. He studied at the Birmingham Municipal Art School and the Royal College of Art before completing his training in Europe. He spent the early years of his career teaching art at Rugby School and at Harrow. In 1898 he founded the Bromsgrove Guild, a highly regarded Arts and Crafts Movement studio which was responsible for creating the famous "Liver Birds" for the Royal Liver Friendly Society Building in Liverpool and the bronzes on Liverpool's Cunard War Memorial. He went on to design many more important war memorials, including Burnley War Memorial, the Burgh of Clydebank War Memorial, the Women War Workers memorial in Harrow, Crewe War Memorial and the sculptures on the Doiran War Memorial in Greece. His other notable commissions included the gates of Buckingham Palace, the Victoria Memorial, the reredos of Liverpool Cathedral, the doors to the Grand Temple of the Masonic Peace Memorial, glass panels for the restaurant on the liner "Queen Mary" and the bronze doors of the Scottish Government Offices in Edinburgh.
