County Cork, Ireland
|Death: ||Nov. 15, 1892|
Excerpt from "A McCarthy Family" by Donald H. Rogers.
"John J. McCarthy was born in 1814 or 1815, in Ireland in the city of Cork. His father was a distiller in the employ of one Frederick Lyons. We do not know his mother or much of his early background, although he may well have been descended from the early Irish clan who built and occupied Blarney Castle. He is known to have had one sister, Margaret, called Peggy."
"He married, probably in 1837, a girl named Ellen Lynch..."
"John J McCarthy and Alfred Lynch were educated by the priests in Cork. A prayer book presented to Alfred for his studies has been handed in the Fred L. McCarthy family."
"As a boy, John was put to learn the tailoring business through the friendship of Mr. Lyons. After completing his apprenticeship he enlisted in the British army, but was discharged because of an eye defect,.."
"Then in 1848 he brought his wife and three children to America, arriving at the Port of Philadelphia on Sept.19, on the ship Glenmore."
"He is listed as a tailor in the Philadelphia city directories, at 6 addresses from 1856-1892. He took out his first papers on Sept.16,1865 and became an American citizen on Jan.18,1868. Four more children were born to him and Ellen, and three of the seven grew to adulthood."
"Some time after Ellen's death in 1874, John took a second wife, Mary Araminta (Scales) Wild, a widow, reputed to be daughter of former mayor of Manchester, England... She and John had 2 children, a son Louis ... and a daughter Mary, who died in infancy."
