Richard Louis Addison, 77, a retired Army colonel and former deputy secretary for public welfare in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, entered eternal rest Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Friday at Southwayside Baptist Church , 301 Thornhill Drive, Dr. Robert Beck, eulogist. Interment: Laurel Land Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at historic Baker Funeral Home; the family will receive guests 7 to 8 p.m.
Richard was born Nov. 20, 1931, in Alexandria, La., to Dewey and Leona Clark Addison. He earned degrees at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, Pepperdine University-Hawaii and University of Texas at Arlington. A 33-year veteran of the U.S. Army, he retired in 1980. Col. Addison came to Fort Worth in 1988. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Kiwanis and Habitat for Humanity. He was an ordained deacon at Southwayside Baptist Church and taught the Senior Men's Bible Class. He also delivered Meals on Wheels weekly, was an avid golfer and ham radio operator.
Richard served at the U.S. Army Staff College in Norfolk, Va., and was a graduate of and professor at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. He was inducted into the Officers' Candidate School Hall of Fame. He received the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Korean War Campaign Medal and the Overseas Service Medal. He received the United Way Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service 1985â€"88. He was a Kiwanis life member, Kiwanian of the Year in 1985â€"Carlisle PM Club, Kiwanian of the Year in 1992-Southwest Kiwanis Club, and the lieutenant governor of Division 1, Texas-Oklahoma District, in 1994. He was awarded the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver, the Good Shepherd Award for Distinguished Service, the Award of Merit, Keystone Council, the National Court of Honor Certificate of Merit and the Good Turn Award.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James B.; and sister, Merdel Edwards.
