He married Lydia Grinnell on September 25, 1712 in Old Saybrook. Joseph and Lydia had six children: Joseph, Jr., Rebecca, Lydia, Daniel, Jared, and Zachariah.

After the death of Lydia in 1726, Joseph had a second marriage to Priscilla Shipman in 1733 in Ohio. Joseph and Priscilla had two children: Zachariah and Jared.
