My Uncle went by "Mike" Yankie all his life, but in the family he was always called "Hoss" or "Hossie" as nicknamed by our Maternal Grandfather Cebren William ("Coot") Whitfield when he was just a baby. He lived on the Yankie/Whitfield place most of his life, and was born there. I was fortunate to have him the first six years of my life. Uncle Hossie brought lemon drops to my brother Grover Lee and me when he came in from work. He would hold me in his lap in a big rocking chair on my Grandmother Yankie's breezeway and play his guitar and sing to me. He played well and a had a very nice voice. He made me feel very special and very loved.

Mike Yankie directed the music at Erath Baptist Church where he also sang duets with his wife, Mattie Lee, as he played his guitar and she played the piano. For many generations the Yankie family has been known for their musical talent extending from the Revolutionary War up to the current generation. (Information provided by his loving niece, Nancy Yankie, daughter of Boots and Opal Yankie.)
