F. W. Lange, an old and respected German citizen, died this morning at 1:30 o'clock at the Santa Rosa infirmary after an illness which began last Tuesday afternoon. He was 74 years old and had lived in San Antonio the past 45 years. For many years he conducted a blacksmith shop on East Commerce street, near the corner of Bowie street.
Surviving him are his widow and five children, as follows: Dr. A. F. Lange, W. H. Lange, Mrs. F. M. Gloeckner, Mrs. Adolph Collmann and Miss Henriette Lange.
The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from the family residence, 332 Blum street, under the auspices of the Order of Hermann Sons, interment being in the Hermann Sons cemetery.
Mr. Lange was taken ill on Tuesday afternoon, having up to that time been in apparently good health. He was taken to the Santa Rosa infirmary, where an operation was performed Wednesday afternoon. The members of his family were constantly at his bedside until the end came, which was quiet and peaceful.
Frederick William Lange was born in Saxony, Germany on May 5, 1838, and came to the United States when he was a boy of 18, making his home at New Braunfels. He came to San Antonio 16 years later and took a position with the United State government as foreman of the woodwork shop, which was then located on the Alamo property. It was here that the government wagons used in this section were built and repaired and he held this position during the civil war.
At the close of the war he formed a partnership with M. Eckenroth and they opened a blacksmith shop on Bowen's island. This was washed away by high water, nothing but the grindstone being left on the premises. Then Mr. Lange formed a partnership with Henry Baetz and for years conducted a blacksmith shop at the corner of Market and Navarro streets under the firm name of Baetz & Lange. Later he established a shop on East Commerce street, which he conducted until he was taken ill.
The honorary pall bearers will be as follows: S. Wolfson, John Illg, G. Schmeltzer, Sr., C. F. Michel, Sr., and R. Becker.
