William "Bill" Hobard Whittington's mother (Melina Dalton Whittington) was the holder of the Mexican and then Texas grants for the area where Devers, Texas is located -- in 1832 known as Dever's Woods. Bill named the town for his friend, Tom Dever, son of Philip Dever. He is also one of the founders of the town of Liberty, Texas.
