On Sunday, May 21, 2006, Mary Adine (Deena) Becker Hill died at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham, N.C. She had been ill since suffering a heart attack while cleaning her yard in Mobile after Hurricane Katrina.
Adine was born April 25, 1923, in Brookhaven, daughter of James Angelo and Sarah Williamson Becker. She met her husband of 53 years, Chester Wilson Hill (deceased Nov. 11, 1998), on a blind date at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II. Chester and Adine took great pleasure in being active participants in the social and cultural life of Mobile. She was a voracious reader who sat up many a night until midnight with a book in her hands. She was a tennis player long after the fainter of heart had given up the game.
Mrs. Hill was active in the Mobile Opera Guild, St. Ignatius Church and long lived book and supper clubs. She loved all things Mississippian and never shied away from a bridge table. A great lover of flowers, music, arts and literature she traveled more than a half-dozen times to Europe. Deena is remembered as a kind, gracious and diplomatic woman who enjoyed her life and will be sorely missed.
Deena was preceded in death by her parents, husband and only sister, Sally Becker Denhollem.
She leaves behind a younger brother, James Angelo Becker, of Jackson, Miss., and six children, Mary Hill Finger, of Arlington, Va., Jackson Becker Hill, of New Orleans, La., Martha Hill Brown, of Driftwood, Texas, Benoit (Ben) Mitchell Hill, of Mobile, Ala., Elizabeth Hill Sherrill, of Raleigh, N.C., and Kathleen Hill Graves, of Durham, N.C. She is also mourned by her sons-in-law and daughter-in-law, her 11 grandchildren, three great-grandsons and her many friends and relations.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, May 24, 2006, at Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street, Mobile, Ala., with the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2006, from St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Internment will be at the Spring Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to assist in the rebuilding of the New Orleans Public Library system. Funeral arrangements by Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St., Mobile, AL 36606.
