Leo is the first born child of Joseph Cler and Theresa Marie Wilhelm of Pesotum, Illinois.
He attended the local Catholic schools in the area.
Leo was a farmer, farming southwest of Pesotum, Illinois where he lived for a number of years and raised his family.
Leo married Helen Margaret Flavin, daughter of James S. Flavin and Mabel Cain, on January 25, 1938. They were married by Father T. J. Flavin of St. Louis, a cousin of the bride and assisted by Father Peter Zwartz pastor of Pesotum parish, and Father Charles D. Martin of Ivesdale parish. Witnesses were Frances Flavin, sister of the bride and Louis Cler, brother of the groom.
Leo and Helen had four children, Anthony Leo "Tony", Frederick John"Freddy", Patricia Helen "Patsy" and Mary Kay.
They later retired from farming and moved to a two story framed house in Pesotum--2 blocks west of the Catholic church and then first house to the north (on the left side of the street).
Leo was a very tall man and rather slender all his life, but gained quite a bit of weight in the last couple years. He had dark hair, medium complexion, and wore glasses. He loved to tell stories and things he did as he was growing up and later in life--and laugh, he was a lot of fun to sit and listen to. He was a very jovial person. If someone would listen, he could sit for hours and tell stories.
On November 21, 1987 they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with an open house in St. Joseph Church parish hall, hosted by their children.
In Leo's later years, he had arthritis so bad, it was difficult for him to get around--used a cane. He had so much back problem. He spent the last days of his life in the hospital, where he fell, broke his hip. He died at the age of 81 years. He died at 1 o'clock in the morning on Christmas Day 1989.
