A.C. Burkholder, Fifty
Years a Banker - Bur-
ed Sunday - Was in
His 75th Year

Probably there was no better known
personage in the Stouffville district
than Mr. A.C. Burkholder who pass-
ed away at his residence in town on
Friday just shortly after noon. He
was in his 75th year, and had been
associated with the banking business
in this place since boyhood. Ten
years ago he retired as manager of
the Canadian Bank of Commerce.
In declining health for a couple
of years, his eyesite recently com-
pletely failed and this proved a sev-
ere shock to the deceased. His de-
mise was a double blow to the family
since only the Saturday before his
death, his only daughter Erma, at
home with her mother due to the
father's condition, received the sad
news of the death of her husband
Lieut. Fraser Ritchie who died in an
English hospital.
Addison C. Burkholder was born
at Lemonville, son of the late John
Burkholder pioneer farmer and saw-
miller. As a youth he came to Stouff
ville and entered the private bank
operated by the late Walter Miller.
He became associated with the char-
tered banks when the Sovereign took
over Mr. Miller's business.
A public spirited citizen Mr. Burk-
holder always stood fo the improve-
ments in the community. He sup-
ported the bylaw for the present
water system; was an advocate of our
good roads system which was so bit-
terly opposed by some ratepayers
during its promotion days. He was a
past master of Richardson Masonic
Lodge, and the I.O.O.F. and an offi-
cial of the United Church.
In sporting circles "A.C." as he
was so familiarly known to all was
a member of the famous Stouffville
lacrosse team that won the Ontario
championship, and was an effective
player. He was on the baseball line-
up too of 45 years ago.
Surviving are his widow the former
Sarah Ann James, daughter of the
late George James, Stouffville, tin-
smith, also one daughter Erma
Ritchie and one grandson Burk
Ritchie. Also surviving are one bro-
ther Herman Burkholder on the old
homestead on the 7th of Whitchurch
and one sister Mrs. Luella Harwood
of Toronto.
The funeral service on Sunday
afternoon was held at the late home,
and was conducted by Rev. D. Davis
of the United Church. The pall
bearers were Dr. E.S. Barker, Dr.
H.B. Freel, F.L. Button, K.C., H.
W. Sanders, Fred Marshall, A. G.
Thompson. Flower bearers were
Messrs. F. E. Rae, C. Pipher,
Wesley Boadway.
